The Union Theatre is a small fringe theatre situated in the borough of Southwark in London, England. It was established in 1998 by Sasha Regan who took the initiative to convert a disused paper warehouse on Union Street near Southwark station into a functioning theatre.
Set beneath railway arches, it is one of the more distinctive theatrical spaces in London.
The Union has a reputation for staging high-quality musicals in its tiny studio space.

The show was originally produced in London by Cameron Mackintosh following its premiere at the Oxford Old Fire Station. The show received scathing reviews and closed at the Piccadilly Theatre after just four months, and has since become a staple of regional and amateur theatre groups after being reworked into a brand new production. Its operatic style was a fusion of “flamenco, hand-clapping and finger-clicking punctuated with yelps, wavering sustained notes in minor keys, labyrinthine interior musical paths, and eruptions into anti-melodic harshness” . Commentaire: Inside the cavernous dank, dark Southwark railway arch which is the Union Theatre, this was a perfect setting for a chamber version of “Sweeney Todd”. And with a 17 strong cast, accompanied by piano and pedal-organ, this production upheld the great reputation earned by earlier Union Theatre musicals (the all-male “Mikado”, “Annie Get Your Gun” and “The Pajama Game”). The production was a sell-out from the very beginning with nightly queues for returns. (plus)
